Intermodal container transport from Europe to the East

Intermodal container transport from Europe to the East

Transport kontenerowy jest bardzo popularny

Containerized transport enables long-distance cargo movement between continents, utilizing multiple transport modes, including the alternative Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian Route)

Containers are universal and standardized worldwide, making logistics processes more efficient and predictable across all transport modes

Advantages of container transport

  • Cargo remains secure inside a closed container, minimizing handling risks
  • The container is sealed by the sender and opened only by the consignee
  • Flexible routing: Containers can be moved via truck, vessel, or rail without repacking
  • Door-to-door delivery available with first and last-mile road transport
  • Higher cargo weight limits compared to standard road transport
  • For very heavy shipments, a 20-foot container is often sufficient (availability depends on route

For shipments from the EU to Eastern countries using the traditional route through Russia, we follow this scheme

  • Container is loaded at the shipper’s facility and transported to a transshipment terminal at the eastern border of Poland, Lithuania, or Latvia
  • At the terminal, the container is transferred to a broad-gauge rail platform for further transport to the destination rail station
  • At the final station, the consignee receives the cargo, completes import customs clearance, and arranges final delivery to their warehouse

The Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian Route) is increasingly used for container deliveries

  • After loading and export customs clearance, the container is transported to a European port. From the port, it is shipped to Georgia
  • In Georgia, the container is placed on a rail platform and transported to the Port of Baku in Azerbaijan
  • A ferry across the Caspian Sea delivers the container to Aktau Port in Kazakhstan, or Turkmenbashi Port in Turkmenistan
  • From the Caspian port, the container continues by rail to the final station anywhere in Central Asia
  • The consignee clears the shipment through customs, collects the container from the station, or unloads it directly at the terminal

Concerns about transshipment when is container transport a useful solution?

Which types of cargo are suitable for container transport

Production lines, machinery, trade fair equipment, furniture, and construction materials for specific projects
-even the smallest items can be loaded into containers and properly secured
-using owned or leased containers allows for storage at the installation, construction, or exhibition site instead of immediate unloading upon arrival.

Heavy goods (e.g., tiles, engine oils, paints)

Goods restricted from transit through Belarus and Russia can be shipped via the alternative Middle Corridor route

Which Eastern countries benefit from container transport?

Maritime transport to Georgia and Azerbaijan
Alternative route via the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian Route) to Central Asia
Traditional rail route to Mongolia and Central Asia

Customs clearance: procedures & recommendations

When exporting goods to third countries, it is essential to determine the customs clearance location and ensure all required documentation is in place. We recommend completing export clearance in the country of origin, preferably near the production facility, to streamline the process

At every border crossing, we cooperate with trusted customs agents who assist in document preparation and the selection of appropriate customs codes

Weight restrictions vary by route segment

In Europe, a standard truck chassis for containers can carry up to 24 tons, meaning the total weight of the cargo and the container cannot exceed this limit. This can be a constraint for some of our Clients, who send heavy and compact shipments such as tiles, engine oils, and paints

Containers can be delivered to European ports by truck or rail, with rail allowing a higher cargo weight

Broad-gauge rail allows for up to 26 tons of cargo per container, so for heavy shipments such as above mentioned, we use multimodal transport: we transport the cargo by truck to the rail terminal, where it is loaded into a container with a 26-ton capacity. This approach optimizes transport costs by allowing an additional 4 tons per container compared to road transport alone, making it a more efficient solution for shipments to Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan

What ensures additional peace of mind?

When choosing a logistics company, it is crucial to consider experience in transportation and transshipping similar types of cargo, familiarity with regulations and requirements for hazardous, phytosanitary, veterinary, oversized, or fragile goods

We cooperate with trusted terminals and ensure flawless transshipment. The expertise and qualifications of our partners allow us to minimize risks

Clever Logistics holds a Freight Forwarder's Liability Insurance, and Cargo Insurance is also available. The Institute Cargo Clause A offers the broadest coverage, including not only transport risks but also storage-related risks

Each client receives daily shipment tracking updates via email, allowing them to plan for unloading and customs clearance at the destination

We do not recommend that European shippers handle import clearance in the destination country. The consignee is typically better equipped to manage this process due to their local expertise in regulations and procedures

We will deliver your cargo safely, selecting the best of our comprehensive logistics solutions
